Elna eXplore 340 is a wonderful machine. This is the model that is used in class and it can tackle delicate and heavyweight fabrics alike.
The most notable features of this machine are:
- The Strong Motor. It is a common misconception that you can put a denim needle on any machine and HEY PRESTO you're making yourself a denim jacket but the truth is, if you don't have enough power to push the needle through the fabric then it isn't happening. This machine however can cope with a good few layers of upholstery fabric and it'll take up your jeans too. It won't sew through a heavy duty cow hide, it draws the line there i'm afraid.
- Needle Threader. The needle threader is an absolute lifesaver honestly. It really has saved my eyesight on so many occasions!
- Top Loading. The 340 has a very easy top loading bobbin compartment. They've cut out the middle-bobbin-case-man to make threading an easier experience.
- Metric and Imperial Measurements on Sewing Bed. These little guys help you ensure your seam allowance is perfect. In dressmaking and quilting that is really important. They also help your sew in a straight line.
-Built in Carry Handle and Hard Case. I have to be able to transport my machines so the hard case is a lifesaver. It truly protects the machine and keep it out of reach of prying little hands! It's a lot neater than those ugly plastic dust covers too so no need to be embarrassed by it sitting in the corner of your livingroom!
- 2 Speed Foot Pedal. The foot pedal has a handy switch on it to increase the speed. So if you are learning the machine won't run away with all your fabric with a slip of the (human) foot.
- 24 stitches. Half of these are for non stretch fabric and half are for stretch.
- Diagrams, Arrows and Numbers. These are all over the machine to help you thread, and wind the bobbin should you forget. It means you don't have to constantly have the manual out to help you!
- One Step Button Hole Function and Foot. The one step button hole is a marvel. If you think of a button hole it is like a little rectangle with four sides. Cheaper machines have 4 step button holes. this means you have to do the bottom of the button hole, then change the setting and do the side of the button hole, then change the settings. . . you see where I am going with this? Yeh well the 340 does your button hole in one go. Not only that you get a great fancy foot that you put your button into and it knows exactly what size of button hole you need. It's magic!!
- And Lots of Other Accessories. You get a bunch of accessories with this machine. Lots of feet such as a zip foot, button hole foot, adjustable blind hem foot, overedge foot, zip foot and the standard foot. You also get a pack of needles, tiny screwdriver, quilting guide, lint brush, 4 bobbins, spare spool pin and 2 little spool caps that keep your thread in place.
It's a fabulous and incredibly versatile machine. It is so user friendly too. This machine is my first choice to teach with. Unless you are looking to create massive quilts there will be no need to upgrade as this is a powerful little guy.
